I collected these from an olive grove in Corfu, Greece in 2021. I was solo travelling, by quad bike, so had nothing except the spare helmet to store them in. I carefully collected as many as I could along with the fluffy seed pods they were on. I arranged them gently in the helmet and hoped for the best on the 40 minute ride back. Surprisingly robust, about half survived intact. I then packed them up for the journey back in my only slightly less suitable hand luggage. Again, quite a few made the journey.
I made one batch of mini displays that same year, then stored the rest. This will be my first restock of these since summer 2021. There are 20 available.
Each display dome has the shed exo-skeleton of an ash cicada (Cicada orni) on a seed puff from where they were found, miniature ‘grass’, a glass mini bell jar and a cork base. The dimensions are 2.5cm or 1” diameter and 4.5cm or 1.6” high (approx.).
